About Totum Health

Totum Health is a Nutritional Therapy and Health Consultancy Practice run by Samantha Howells, Certified Nutritional Therapist and Health Coach.

"Totum" is Latin for "all" or "the whole" which is the fundamental principle of how we see health. Using the concept of Integragtive Nutrition, our services are focused on whole body nourishment and we look to understand the root cause of health concerns, working with you to find nutritional and lifestyle changes that provide lasting benefits.

At Totum Health, we are passionate about helping our clients achieve their optimal health using personally tailored nutrition programs and lifestyle change plans. We believe in the power of preventative healthcare - using  personalised guidance, coaching and support to help individuals take control of their whole health and truly thrive!

Samantha Howells Nutritional Therapist

I'm Samantha Howells, Certified Nutritional Therapist and Health Coach based in Greater Manchester. I have been a great lover of food and health for as long as I can remember, but helping others transform their health was not the career path I originally started on. I worked in the cooperate world of accounting for over 12 years as a chartered accountant before I left it all behind to start my journey as a Nutritional Therapist and Health Coach. My family provided me with the inspiration and motivation to make such a big change, however, it was my own health struggles that opened my eyes to the importance of whole health, incorporating both authentic nutrition and a healthy lifestyle.

At the age of 29 I believed I was in peak health and fitness, I worked hard, played hard, and exercised hard. I thought I was fueling my body right, eating a 'clean', high protein diet and taking supplements, typically recommended to fitness enthusiasts.....until I suffered acute kidney failure and was hospitalised.  In a matter of hours my body began to shut down as I developed sepsis. The doctors tried to establish why a seemingly young, fit and healthy individual had become so desperately ill, so quickly. They ran test after test but were unable to identify the root cause of my sudden illness. In the end I was treated with antibiotics and thankfully, was able to make a full recovery after being discharged from hospital. The whole episode was put down to a 'freak infection', but that never felt right to me, and I began studying nutrition to understand more about the impact this was having on my body.

Over the next couple of years, I continued working hard, playing hard and exercising hard, making improvements to my diet and believing that my underlying health had been what had saved me....until I suffered a mental break down in my early thirties. I was diagnosed with severe depression, signed-off work and prescribed various medications and therapies. It took a long, hard, personal journey through a very dark place to get back on my feet and free of medication, but I was determined to take back control of both my physical and mental health.

It became clear to me that the various stresses I had been putting on myself and my body were causing harm on both a physical and mental level. By this time, I had been studying nutrition and working with mental health experts for a number of years and had started to understand how health needed to be viewed as a whole. I saw that making lifestyle and nutritional changes to remove the root cause of a problem was so much more effective than trying to treat individual symptoms - they went away on their own!

Not long after the birth of my son, Charlie, I realised that I was following the wrong path, I had found my true calling and it wasn't as an accountant! I studied further and became certified as a Health Coach. When I found out that I was pregnant with my second child, Elodie, I realised that it was time to make the leap and completed my certification in Nutritional Therapy, with the aim of setting up my own practice.

For years, I had watched my Dad suffer with deteriorating health, he had his first heart attack at the age of 49, which shook my world. He went on to develop type 2 diabetes along with a host of other related health concerns, and quickly became insulin dependent. I lost my Dad when he was just 72 and I knew that all the diseases he had been suffering from for years were all lifestyle diseases that could have been prevented. I was determined to help others see the power they hold to transform their health and live long, happy, healthy lives and Totum Health was born!
